Carl Returns to Tompkins Square Park
Carl had been missing from T.S.P. for more than 6 months .When one of the park regulars disappears for a while most just assume the worst .Carl though had gone to detox at Beth Israel and then through a rehab program .Later he was placed in housing on the far side of Brooklyn .
Way out in Brooklyn its quiet , too quiet . Carl claims that the confines out there were driving him crazy ... boredom , nothing happening . Out there "the crickets don't even bother to chirp ".

Blinky ...
As we were photographing Blinky we heard in the distance angry shouts and the sound of breaking glass . We and Blinky headed toward the source of these sounds : Carl and Jewels violently arguing in the row of seats next to avenue A in Thompkins Square Park .
The confrontation , which came close to heavy blows being delivered , ended with the broken glass candle holder which Carl had thrown at Jewels on the ground , a very angry Carl standing alone and Jewels walking away with his cane .
Carl was angry because Jewels had just very disrespectfully wrecked a memorial to Chino who had died recently . This memorial has been maintained in the park by some of the park friends of Chino for a week or so . Chino was a regular in TSP for a long time . According to witnesses , Jewels had taken one of the better flowers from the memorial and also had senselessly damaged those floweres that remained .

Carl and Keith
Keith has difficulty speaking now because of injuries resulting from having 4 young men kick him repeatedly in the head in Tompkins Square Park a bit more than a month ago . He needs medical attention and should be in the hospital but he has at least twice signed himself out against the advice of his doctors inorder to be back in the park and street , free and with his friends .

Santa Claus and Two Inflated Condoms at Ray's Candystore
Some one had been handing out creams , condoms and other assorted latex paraphernalia in the area . Several had showed us their handsful of these items ; some giggling a bit . Santa Claus ( Carl ) in the spirit of the late Benny hill , used a portion of his latex allotment to create a mammary fantasy .

Last Stand on 13th Street...
Two nights before the Giuliani administration , employing hundreds of cops and a single 1950 s era International Harvester (remember Haymarket Square ) APC (armored personnel carrier) , forcibly evicted the members of the 13th street squats , Carl the Trotskyist (right) and John the Communist are seen tabling : hustling books , pamphlets and "Class War Organizer " T-shirts . Behind them can be seen some other squatters and the 13th street squat buildings ,one of the largest squat building complexes in the East Village .
A week or so before this night some of the squat interiors had been pictured in the Sunday design magazine of the New York Times as examples of " Squatter Chic " . Seen as examples of good , low- cost design by some design critics the pictures and article were also seen as an affront to the Giuliani administration making the military style mass eviction inevitable .

A Walk Through the East Village With the New Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder Camera

All the images above were exposed at an ISO of 1250 or 2500 using a new Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera . The purpose of this photo-journey through the village sreets was to test this new camera in the extreme condition of the streets of New York City at night .Low noise , high ISO camera performance is an absolute necessity for night-time photo work ,at least as far as I am concerned , which often amounts to carving a usable image out of darkness . I used this camera as I have used all cameras ,whether Leica M6 or Canon 1v or 1DMk II or Epson R-D1 , fast and in the moment , without much time available for thought or planning the image to be made . The M8 performed very well giving me back the oportunity to work the way , my preferred way ,that I had worked for many years using my four M6 s and my Leica and Leitz lenses .
