Things that Go Boom in the Night
Last night this looming industrial behemoth on 14 th street between avenue C and the East River made big noise ... noise so loud and with such presence that one would be tempted to believe that some one in the neighborhood was repeatedly launching Saturn 5 moon rockets from their backyard patio . It was nothing quite so dramatic and all things , regardless the extreme volume of the abrupt and repeated sonic attacks , stayed earthbound .
Though the police and fire department were dispatched to the scene , no action by members of either department was required at the scene with most units remaining for only a short time . It seems that there was at no time any danger , just very loud noise produced by Con Edison repeatedly venting large quantities of high pressure , high velocity steam into the atmoshere with an explosive auditory result. I do not know the reason that the venting was required .
