Markey Hayden Bena Again Beaten While Sleeping Alone on the Street . This Time on 9th Street .
Markey Bena , noticeably in pain , walked with difficulty to the infamous phone booth at 7th street and avenue A known in our local sector of the blogosphere as the "Pee Phone " . The booth would provide a much needed , if unaesthetic , seat for Markey . We had been talking to Markey who was tiring and in pain and needed a place to sit and rest . Markey had only been out of the hospital for a few days and was not at all well . According to Markey , 9 days ago at 2 am Markey , while trying to sleep on 9th street just around the corner from Doc Holiday's , was beaten with a wooden dowel used as a club and kicked by 4 young males dressed in white .
We wrote of Markey recently , May 15 , and another beating that he suffered on the night of May 8th , the same night that Lesia Pupshaw and 2 males were severely beaten in Tompkins Square Park .On that night there were witnesses to the attack on Markey that confirmed the details of the attack that he related to us . There were no witnesses to this most recent attack ;we only have Markey's account of this most recent beating of 9 days ago .
Early Monday morning , 29 June , Markey was trying to sleep on the sidewalk . 4 males in their late teens and 1 female companion approached . The 4 males dressed in white and wearing "Doc Martens " , 2 of them wearing black bowler hats , began to beat with a wooden club and kick Markey . Markey at one point referred to his attackers as "Droogs" , the young sociopaths from "A Clock Work Orange". Marky claims that he believes he heard his attackers speeking Portuguese . Markey claims the female companion , dressed in lacy white attire , also laughed loudly as her companions battered and kicked Markey . Markey became unconscious early in the attack and remembers nothing further other than waking somewhat later at Belleview Hospital .
At Belleview Markey was treated , his hair was sheared and his scalp sewn and stapled . Markey claimed that his body is covered with numerous contusions and abrasions . Markey spent the better part of 3 days in hospital .
While there is no doubt that Markey was severely beaten in the street we have no other witnesses than Markey to confirm the details of his "Clock Work Orange-esque" account of the beating .
This Tuesday evening at Ray's Candy Store Markey was accompanied by a friend who was looking after him . His friend was trying to get Markey off the street . She finally took a still weak and wounded Markey by cab back to the hospital for more medical attention .

Young Males Beat A Homeless Man Near Tompkins Square Park Friday Night ...
Friday night sometime around 10:30 or 11:00 PM , Markey Hayden Bena was beaten by 3 young Hispanic males , one wearing a baseball cap , on the south east corner of the intersection of avenue B and 7th street . Markey lives on the street most of the time and sometimes perhaps drinks too much . Many in the neighborhood have known Markey for a long time . Markey was an easy target .
Markey told us tonight that Friday night on the corner opposite Vazac's horse shoe bar a young Hispanic male jumped him from behind . While attempting to deal with the attack of the one male , 2 more young Hispanic males attacked from behind a parked car .Markey as can be seen from the picture above took a nasty beating .
The attackers hit hard for a short time and then ran . People at Vazacs called police and helped clean up some of Markey's bloody wounds . Vazacs personnel confirm all of this .
According to Markey all 3 males were young and Hispanic ; one wore a baseball cap .
This beating occurred a half hour to an hour before the beatings in TSP . This beating occured a half block from Crusty Row in TSP.
Markey also told us that 4 days later on Tuesday night after attending Lesia Pupshaw's wake he was walking on avenue C sometime around 9:30 PM . A young male yelled out to him "hey man , I beat you the other night ". Markey quickly headed west at the corner of 11th street and avenue C , down 11th street . The young male that had yelled out followed Markey and attacked and beat him again somewhere between avenue B and avenue C .
Markey's description of his attackers is close to the Crusty descriptions of their attackers , the times of the attacks were close and the locations were not far apart . No substantiated connection here we know but it is clear that both cases clearly demonstrate that being homeless can be a dangerous way to live .

Markey Hayden Bena Attacked on 7th Street Again ...
The picture above was taken at Ray's Candy Store at 11:15 PM Monday night . Markey was attacked and beaten an hour earlier on 7th street between avenues C and D . This is the 3rd post that we have made since the middle of May 2009 depicting a battered Markey .
Tonight 3 young males , Markey claims 15 to 17 years of age , attacked Markey while he was sitting quietly on the sidewalk drinking a beer . The young males seemed to know Markey . They commented "... oh you got a hair cut man ..." . Markey's hair was shaved at the beginning of July to make way for stitches after his most recent beating that occured on 9th street . These 3 may have been some of the same young males that beat Markey on May 8th of this year . This previous beating occured at 7th street and avenue B in front of Vasac's Horse Shoe Bar .
Markey as can be seen has some cuts , scrapes and bruises . He reported the attack to the 9th precinct . He had not received medical attention yet when we photographed him .

Markey and Friends Johnny "Crutches" and Eden
These are better days for Markey . The last 3 posts concerning him had all shown Markey with the black ,blue and red marks of the beatings that he had endured while living in the street . Tonight on avenue A we instead happily picture him with two of his friends.
